    About InSinkErator in LA

InSinkErator (Emerson) manufactures the majority of garbage disposals installed in Los Angeles homes, condos, and rental units. If your unit has a red reset button on the bottom and a hex socket for the unjamming wrench, it's almost certainly an InSinkErator.

We work on every current and legacy InSinkErator line: the Badger series (Badger 1, Badger 5, Badger 500, Badger 900), the Evolution series (Compact, Select, Essential XTR, Excel), the Pro series (Pro 333, Pro 750, Pro 1100XL), and older continuous-feed models still hanging under LA sinks from the 1990s and 2000s.

Most InSinkErator service calls are diagnosed in the first 10 minutes on site. Roughly 60% end with a same-visit repair; the other 40% are units past their service life where replacement is the honest recommendation.

    Common Problems

InSinkErator Issues We See Every Week

    Humming but not spinning

Classic jammed impeller — usually a bone fragment, cherry pit, or lodged silverware. We free the plates from underneath with the InSinkErator hex wrench, reset the overload, and confirm smooth rotation before leaving.

Complete silence when you flip the switch

Either the internal overload has tripped (fixable with a reset), the wall switch or air-switch has failed, or the motor windings are burnt out. We meter the unit to isolate which one — and we don't sell you a new disposal when the real problem is a $20 switch.

Leak from the bottom of the unit

A leak from the motor housing seam is terminal on every InSinkErator model — the seal is not user-serviceable. We recommend replacement and can install the same or upgraded model on the same visit.

Leak from the top (sink flange)

Very common on 8–12 year old installs. The plumber's putty under the flange has dried out and shrunk. We drop the disposal, re-bed the flange with fresh putty, and reinstall — the unit itself is fine.

    Leak from the dishwasher inlet

The rubber gasket on the dishwasher inlet fails or the hose clamp loosens. Quick fix — usually $99–$150 including parts.

    Loud grinding or rattling

Foreign object stuck in the grind chamber (usually a bottle cap, screw, or piece of glass). We fish it out with mirror and magnetic tools, then check the impeller plates for damage.

    Why Us

Why We're Set Up For InSinkErator

    • InSinkErator uses the same mounting system (EZ Mount / Quick Lock) across almost every model — no plumbing rework when we swap units.
    • We keep the reset key, hex wrench, and common seal kits on the truck for same-visit repairs.
    • We stock or can pick up Badger 5, Evolution Compact, and Evolution Essential XTR the same day from Home Depot and Ferguson locations across LA.
    • We honor the manufacturer warranty on units we install — you keep your factory coverage plus our 1-year labor warranty.
    • We can quote you both a repair and a same-model replacement before you commit — so you decide with real numbers, not pressure.
    LA-Specific

What's Different About InSinkErator In Los Angeles

Los Angeles water is hard (roughly 12–16 grains per gallon in most neighborhoods). Over 8–10 years, mineral buildup coats the impeller plates and slows the grind. This isn't a defect — it's why an InSinkErator that ran perfectly for a decade will suddenly seem underpowered.

In older LA homes (pre-1980) we frequently find the disposal is not on a dedicated circuit or the wiring predates modern code. We're happy to diagnose and swap the unit, but if we find unsafe wiring we'll flag it — sometimes an electrician is the right call before we install.
