Older Altadena homes rarely have straightforward under-sink layouts. A typical Craftsman kitchen still has the original galvanized or cast-iron drain stub, and the disposal has been swapped out three or four times over the years. Every replacement leaves the trap arm a little shorter and the discharge tube a little more angled. Original farmhouse sinks or thick tile counters put unusual pressure on the sink flange. Old putty cracks, water pools inside the cabinet, and by the time you notice it the shelf is already soft. We drop the disposal, re-bed the flange with fresh plumber's putty, and re-torque the mount.
Common when someone tries to swap a 1/2 HP Badger for a full-size Evolution. We measure first — if there isn't clearance, we recommend a compact 3/4 HP model that fits the original space without cabinet surgery.
Impeller jam — most common Altadena same-day call. We free it from below with a hex wrench, reset the overload, and confirm the motor spins freely under load. Typically 20–30 minutes on-site.
In post-remodel kitchens 90% of the time this is a forgotten knockout plug inside the new disposal's inlet. Fixed in 15 minutes without pulling anything apart.

Janes Village
Issue: 1922 Craftsman — Badger 5 humming, sink backing up.
Fix: Jam cleared in 15 min, but sink still drained slowly — snaked the branch drain another 6 feet, removed a grease plug from a 2020 remodel. Total 55 min.
Meadows
Issue: Post-remodel kitchen — new Bosch dishwasher flooding under the sink whenever it drained.
Fix: Knockout plug still in place in the new InSinkErator inlet. Punched it out, reconnected, done in 20 min.
Farnsworth Park
Issue: 1938 bungalow — disposal leaking from the bottom seam.
Fix: Cast-iron housing was rusted through. Replaced with an Evolution Compact 3/4 HP, adjusted the trap arm for proper slope. 75 min on-site.
