    Overview

    What This Service Covers

Garbage disposal installation is different from a replacement swap. Replacement means there's already a disposal there and we're changing units — flanges, drain layout, and power are usually in place. Installation means the kitchen either has no disposal at all (bare drain from the sink to the P-trap), or the existing plumbing needs to be reworked for a new setup: fresh flange, new drain elbow, sometimes a new dishwasher inlet if the dishwasher wasn't previously connected to a disposal.

We handle both scenarios across Los Angeles: first-time installs in older Craftsman and Spanish Revival homes that never had a disposal, and new installs during kitchen remodels, ADU builds, tenant turnovers, and condo renovations. If the electrical needs to be run fresh, we do that too (in coordination with an electrician if a new circuit is required). Most installs finish in 60–90 minutes on-site once we've confirmed the drain and power configuration.

Common calls: a homeowner just bought a house and wants to add a disposal for the first time; a landlord upgrading a rental kitchen and wants a solid mid-range unit installed cleanly; a remodel contractor calling us in during the punch-list phase to install the disposal after cabinets, sink, and countertop are done. We coordinate with the other trades so you don't end up with a leak on day one.

    When To Call

Signs You Need Garbage Disposal Installation

Install (not replacement) when: your kitchen has never had a disposal and you want one added; you're doing a kitchen remodel or ADU build where the sink and drain are being reworked from scratch; you're switching from a single-bowl to a double-bowl sink (or vice versa) and the drain layout changes; or you're adding a dishwasher connection at the same time and want the disposal chosen with dishwasher drainage in mind.

If a disposal is already there and it's dying, that's a replacement (see the replacement page) — usually simpler and cheaper because the flange and drain layout are already in place. If you're not sure which one you need, call and describe what's under your sink: we'll tell you which service applies and quote accordingly.

    Situations We Handle

    What We See Most Often

First-time install in an older LA home

Common in 1920s–1950s homes across Silver Lake, Highland Park, Pasadena, and older Glendale/Altadena. The sink drains straight into a P-trap with no disposal in line. We add the flange, mount the disposal, rework the drain plumbing to include the disposal discharge, and confirm the trap arm is at the right height so the sink drains cleanly.

    Kitchen remodel install

New sink, new countertop, new cabinets — we come in after the cabinet and sink installer, add the disposal, tie into the new dishwasher, and wire the power. Coordination with the general contractor or homeowner is key; we usually arrive during the punch-list phase.

    ADU or new construction

Second units and detached ADUs across the Valley and East LA. We install fresh from scratch: flange, mount, discharge, dishwasher inlet (if applicable), and power. If the electrician has run a dedicated disposal circuit with a switch or air switch, we tie in cleanly.

    Rental upgrade between tenants

Landlord and property manager calls — kitchen was rented without a disposal, tenant turnover is a good time to add one. We install a durable mid-range unit (Badger 5 or Waste King L-2600 are common picks) and leave the invoice tenant-ready.

Adding dishwasher tie-in with the disposal

If you're also adding a dishwasher, the disposal is where the dishwasher drain hose connects. We knock out the disposal's dishwasher inlet plug, install the hose with a proper high-loop or air gap (per LA county code), and confirm the dishwasher drains cleanly under a full cycle test.

Sink upgrade from single-bowl to double-bowl (or vice versa)

Drain layout changes with sink type. If you're going from single to double, the disposal typically ends up under one side and needs a tee fitting and new baffle plumbing. We rework the drain to fit the new sink and mount the disposal on the correct side.
